Job Description
The Biomedical Technician is responsible for ensuring the safety, functionality, and operational readiness of all medical equipment within the facility. The role encompasses preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment inspection, performance testing, documentation, vendor coordination, and medical gases management. The Biomedical Technician plays a critical role in supporting uninterrupted clinical operations, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and ensuring all biomedical equipment is available, functional, and fit for patient care at all times.
Preventive Maintenance
- Plan and execute scheduled preventive maintenance programs for all medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and departmental schedules
- Calibrate equipment as per manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements
- Document all maintenance activities including dates, procedures performed, and findings
- Proactively identify potential issues and take corrective action before equipment failure occurs
Corrective Maintenance & Repair
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and malfunctions reported by clinical staff
- Diagnose faults using technical manuals, diagnostic software, and testing tools
- Execute repairs on-site or escalate to authorized vendors when required
- Follow up on vendor repairs to ensure timely completion and equipment return to service
- Communicate equipment status and estimated turnaround time to clinical teams
Equipment Inspection & Safety Testing
- Conduct pre-use and post-maintenance safety and performance testing on all medical equipment
- Apply electrical safety testing protocols in compliance with IEC and facility standards
- Tag and label equipment status clearly (functional, under maintenance, or out of service)
- Remove equipment that fails safety testing from clinical use immediately and initiate corrective action
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and complete maintenance records, service reports, and asset documentation in the equipment management system
- Track equipment history, lifecycle status, warranty information, and service contracts
- Generate periodic maintenance and performance reports for management review
- Ensure all documentation is audit-ready and accessible at all times
Vendor & Inventory Coordination
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for quotations, spare parts procurement, warranty follow-up, and service visits
- Maintain an adequate inventory of critical spare parts and consumables
- Schedule and oversee vendor service visits, ensuring adherence to facility protocols
- Evaluate vendor performance and escalate service issues to the Biomedical Engineer when required
Medical Gases Management
- Manage the safe refilling, storage, and distribution of medical gas cylinders to clinical departments as per requests
- Ensure proper labeling, handling, and transportation of all medical gas cylinders in accordance with safety regulations
- Monitor gas cylinder inventory levels and initiate timely replenishment orders
- Conduct regular inspections of medical gas storage areas and systems for safety compliance
Skills
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in preventive and corrective maintenance of medical equipment (patient monitors, infusion pumps, ECG machines, diagnostic devices)
- Knowledge of electrical safety testing protocols and IEC standards for medical devices
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics
- Competency in calibration techniques and equipment performance testing
- Familiarity with medical gas systems and safe handling and storage procedures
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in biomedical equipment management systems
Managerial / Professional Skills:
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure in a clinical environment
- Good communication and teamwork skills with clinical and non-clinical staff
- Organizational ability to prioritize multiple maintenance tasks concurrently
