Histopathology Resident

Role Purpose

Within the limits of his/her delineated clinical privileges, to practice diagnostic and consultative services in Histopathology and Cytology specimens with regard to policies and procedures of the department, in full compliance to Dallah Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and to support the Laboratory Medical Director in the overall management of the department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides grossing of all histology and cytology specimens referred to the laboratory.

2. Reporting straightforward cases independently and complex specimens/cases under supervision of consultants.

3. Supervises histopathology technologist(s) in performing routine and special staining of specimens.

4. Oversee the Laboratory technician assign in Histopathology section for organizing and maintaining filing system for reports, slides and blocks and for disposal of reported tissues after officially specified period of time.

5. Oversee the Laboratory technician assign in Histopathology section in establishing/maintaining a proper system for the reception and registration of specimens.

6. Responsible for all Histopathology section requirements and establishes stock and equipment maintenance register.

7. Share in the responsibilities of laboratory safety and quality control in the pertinent sections.

8. Sets up new techniques as required.

9. Responsible in performing Fine Needle Aspiration and assistance in frozen section specimens.

10. Responsible for assistance in all surgical pathology report and cytology reports as per the departmental policies and procedures.

11. Initial screening of Immunohistochemistry slides of both positive and negative cases with quality controls, and to assist in technical aspects, troubleshooting and developments of new Immunohistochemical markers under the supervision of consultants.

12. Responsible for complying STAT reporting and Panic results reporting as per the policies and procedures of the hospital.

13. Overview all the activities in Histopathology section including all accreditations documentation preparation.

14. Clinical liaison with colleagues as required.

15. To serve and oversee activities related Tissue Review committee as required.

16. Responsible for organizing in-service training of technologists placed in Histopathology.

17. Demonstrates interpersonal & communication skills that establish & maintain professional relationships with patients, families, co-workers & other members of healthcare team.

18. Able to demonstrate both understanding of contexts and systems in which healthcare is provided and ability to apply this knowledge to improve and optimize healthcare.

19. Demonstrates commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding & sensitivity to diversity & responsible attitude towards other staff and patients.

20. Must be accessible to the laboratory as needed for on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation and is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory.

21. Responsible for performing and recording competency assessment.

22. Enrolment and participation in proficiency testing.

23. Resolution of technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken.

24. Ensuring that patient results are not reported until corrective actions are taken and test systems are functioning properly.

25. Establishment of a quality control program to monitor ongoing test performance and review of quality control data, assessment of competency, or review of proficiency testing performance.

26. Attends appropriate meetings of the medical staff as directed by the Head of Laboratory.

27. Develops and co-ordinates the Quality Improvement Program within his/her area of responsibilities.

28. Participate in patient and family education to help patients and families to better understand and participate in their care and make well informed care decisions.

29. Performs any other duties within the range of his/her professional knowledge and skills as

directed by the Head of Laboratory and/or Chief of Medical.

Knowledge and Experience: Two years post-qualification in a reputable hospital.

Education and Certification Requirements: Medical Degree, M.B.B.S. or equivalent | Saudi Board or MSc or MD/PhD or equivalent

Skills: Able to speak and read Arabic and English Language. Knowledge and skills in the modern techniques utilized in laboratory services.
