Job Description

Function as a key member of the Operating Theatre team by establishing and maintaining the sterile field, preparing instruments and equipment, anticipating the needs of the surgeon during procedures, and supporting safe, efficient, evidence-based perioperative care in compliance with hospital standards and protocols.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & ACTIVITIES:

  • Prepare the operating theatre for surgical procedures by ensuring all sterile instruments, implants, sutures, consumables, and equipment are available, checked, and arranged appropriately for the planned case.
  • Perform surgical hand antisepsis, gowning, and gloving according to aseptic principles, and establish and maintain the sterile field throughout the procedure.
  • Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, draping, and operating room readiness in collaboration with the surgical and anesthesia teams while maintaining patient dignity and safety.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team and pass instruments, sutures, sharps, and supplies accurately, efficiently, and safely during procedures.
  • Perform and document sponge, sharps, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse according to policy, and immediately escalate and resolve any discrepancy.
  • Continuously monitor the sterile field and take immediate action in the event of contamination or a break in aseptic technique to reduce the risk of infection and other perioperative complications.
  • Handle, label, and transfer surgical specimens safely and correctly in accordance with hospital policy and procedural requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, implants, and surgeon preferences, particularly in orthopedic and sports medicine procedures where applicable.
  • Promote evidence-based practice, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to the review and implementation of perioperative policies, procedures, and patient safety standards.
  • Maintain annual mandatory training, scrub role competencies, and ongoing professional development relevant to perioperative nursing practice.
  • Ensure cost-effective use of instruments, implants, and consumables while maintaining compliance with infection prevention, and organizational safety requirements.

Necessary knowledge and Experience to be able to do the job:

Minimum 2-3 years of perioperative nursing experience, including at least 1 year in a scrub nurse or similar intraoperative role, preferably within orthopedic, sports medicine.

Education and Certification requirements:

  • Graduate of a recognized School of Nursing. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Post graduate qualifications are ideal. 
  • Fulfil all licensing requirements.

Job specific technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to set up and maintain a sterile field and apply aseptic technique consistently throughout all phases of the procedure.
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical instruments, sutures, implants, sharps management, and case-specific equipment used in the operating theatre.
  • Competence in performing accurate sponge, sharps, needle, and instrument counts in collaboration with the circulating nurse.
  • Ability to anticipate the surgeon’s needs, pass instruments safely and efficiently, and assist within organizational scope of practice.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, transfer requirements, and intraoperative documentation standards.
  • High proficiency in English language is mandatory. Arabic will be a definitive advantage.
