Job Description
The Specialist Optometrist is responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based specialist optometric care within the Bupa CareConnect Integrated Care Clinic (ICC), ensuring high-quality diagnosis, management, and continuity of ocular health services for Bupa members. The Specialist Optometrist integrates into a multidisciplinary care model, supports chronic disease co-management (particularly diabetic eye care), and upholds clinical standards in full alignment with CBAHI, JCI, SCHS, and MOH regulatory requirements. The role contributes to Bupa CareConnect’s strategic vision of delivering integrated, patient-centered healthcare and preventive eye health management.
Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations including refraction, tonometry, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and fundus assessment
- Diagnose and document refractive errors, dry eye disease, glaucoma (monitoring), diabetic retinopathy (co-management), and anterior segment disorders
- Prescribe corrective lenses, contact lenses, and low vision aids as clinically indicated
- Ensure zero missed critical findings with timely documentation of all clinical findings in the HIS
- Escalate cases requiring surgical or advanced ophthalmological intervention to the supervising Ophthalmologist
Integrated & Multidisciplinary Care
- Collaborate with BCC physicians, Care Program teams, and chronic disease specialists for integrated patient management
- Attend MDT rounds and case conferences to contribute optometric insights to complex patient care
- Coordinate timely ophthalmology referrals and monitor patient outcomes via established care pathways
- Communicate optometric findings clearly to the multidisciplinary team to support integrated care decisions
Chronic Disease Ocular Co-Management
- Provide evidence-based optometric screening and structured follow-up within the Diabetes Care Program and Chronic Care Management (CCM) pathways
- Flag retinopathy progression to the MDT and escalate to ophthalmology when clinically required
- Document findings accurately and update care plans in BCC Edge in alignment with clinical protocols
- Coordinate with endocrinologists and primary care physicians for integrated diabetic eye care
Clinical Quality & Regulatory Compliance
- Adhere to CBAHI, JCI, MOH, and SCHS standards in all clinical activities at all times
- Participate in OPPE/FPPE evaluation cycles and peer review processes as required
- Follow all clinical SOPs, infection control protocols, and patient safety policies
Maintain valid SCHS licensure and comply with all CPD and professional registration requirements
Digital Health & EHR Utilization
- Document all consultations, clinical findings, prescriptions, and referrals accurately and completely in the BCC health information system
- Maintain complete, timely, and audit-ready patient records in accordance with CBAHI and MOH standards
- Ensure proper clinical coding and documentation to support insurance authorization and claims processing
- Utilize digital health tools and platforms to support efficient and high-quality care delivery
Patient Education & Experience
- Educate patients on ocular health, preventive eye care, contact lens hygiene, and chronic condition management
- Respond to patient concerns with empathy, professionalism, and clarity
- Actively contribute to NPS improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives
- Promote preventive eye health behaviors and support patient self-management
Skills
- Advanced optometric examination techniques including refraction, tonometry, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and fundus assessment
- Contact lens fitting and management including soft, RGP, and specialty lenses
- Ocular disease diagnosis and co-management (glaucoma monitoring, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye)
- Low vision assessment and rehabilitation
- Proficiency with EHR/EMR systems; experience with BCC Edge is an advantage
- Understanding of CBAHI, JCI, MOH, and SCHS compliance requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team
- Strong communication skills in Arabic and English (spoken and written)
